Disciples Church is partnering with HART of Folsom to offer temporary, emergency shelter for homeless people in Folsom this winter. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we will not be able to host the shelter this year. Instead we will be providing all volunteers to staff a larger host site (Oak Hills Church) for the week of February 28-March 6. There are several ways you can volunteer to help during this week: greeting guests as they arrive, providing food for dinner or breakfast, staying overnight with the guests, and many other ways.

Volunteer sign-ups are open!

We need volunteers for the following positions each day of the week that we are staffing the Oak Hills site:

Greeters, 5:00pm – 8:00pm:  Help set up site for guests. Make coffee, Set out items for meals. Provide hospitality to guests during dinner. Coordinate with HART volunteers at site. Depending on site, assist with laundry and showers.

Shower Team, 5:30pm – 8:00pm:   Verify shower is operating properly, oversee guest showers and provide toiletries, clean/disinfect surfaces after shower time.

Clothing Laundry, 5:30pm – 8:00pm:  Using shelter site laundry facilities, wash/dry clothing of guests taking showers.

Towel Laundry, pickup by 8:00pm/return by 5:30pm next day:  pickup used towels at shelter site, launder offsite, return clean towels the following day.

Dinner Volunteers, 6:15pm – 7:30pm:  Provide a dinner (main dish, side dish, dessert, drink) for up to 20 guests (25 total to include the volunteers). Arrive at the site by 6:15pm for dinner service at 6:30pm. You’re invited and encouraged to stay to enjoy the meal with our guests if you can. Clean up and take home any extra food, if the site cannot store it.  Note:  Folsom Dam Grill, Sutter St. Tacqueria and Chicago Fire are providing the main dish each week on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday night respectively so we ask the volunteer on these nights to please provide a side dish, drinks and dessert rather than a main dish.

Breakfast Drop-Off, Sunday only, 6:15pm – 7:15pm:  Provide supplies for a to-go breakfast for the guests. Include items easy for the guests to transport, such as fruit, drink, granola bar, etc. Plan to bring all non-perishable breakfast food items for the entire week to the shelter site on Sunday unless other arrangements are made with the host site leader. There may not be heating facilities at the site.

Overnight Supervision, 8:00pm – 6:45am:  Supervise the shelter overnight. Arrive at facility, take turns sleeping, and ensure that all is safe and secure during the night. Start coffee and help ready guests for pick up in the morning. Hand off to HART morning team at 6:30am.
